Church
Sunday services are
well-attended, and the Eucharist is celebrated every week. Due to our strong
links to the school we have a large number of young families attending, but
there is also a faithful and long-serving core of slightly more mature
worshippers.
Throughout the Church year
services are adapted to reflect the season, and on days such as Mothering
Sunday and Harvest Festival we hold all-age services so that the children can
be in Church for these special occasions. On a few Sundays each year a whole Parish
service is held at St. Thomas’ and on these days there is no service at St
Agnes’.

Sunday
School
Our Sunday School
first began at a cottage at High Knolls, but people soon realised that a
permanent base was needed and as such the first foundation stone for St Agnes
School and Sunday School was laid by Miss Agnes Whittaker on 21st
May 1869. By 1880 a church was deemed
necessary and our church was opened by the second Bishop of Manchester on 27th
November 1880.
Now, almost 150
years later, St Agnes Sunday School is still thriving. My name is Laura Lees and I am Sunday School
Leader. With the help of a dedicated
team of parent volunteers, we teach, entertain and encourage the children to
grow together in love, compassion and mutual respect, based on the Christian
values we hold at St Agnes.
Our Sunday School
actually takes place within St Agnes School and as such this enables the younger
children to become familiar with the surroundings of a primary school. A child’s attendance at Sunday School and
parental attendance at Church forms part of the Admissions criteria for St
Agnes’ and other Church schools.
Our Sunday school
starts at 9.10am prompt, and every week we begin with a visit from the clergy
who welcome the children and open with a prayer. We then celebrate birthdays and have our own
‘collection’ of pennies from the children in aid of Sunday School funds. We will normally have a short discussion with
a video or slide show, similar to the topic in Church, followed by prayer. We sometimes sing songs or play games, or even
have a short quiz and then the children then break out into smaller age
appropriate groups to carry on with further activities. Our younger children have access to various
toys and regularly join in the preschool activities under parental
supervision. There are stories, songs,
crafts and activities leading up to 10.00am, when the children then go up to
church for a blessing. We sit within our
groups in church and then we join in the final hymn and blessing, before going
back to the school hall for coffee and biscuits.
St Agnes Sunday School is fun and friendly, yet we aim
to sustain the Christian ethos of caring for one another and generating a
loving atmosphere, which is at the heart of this small church and school.

One of our Sunday school children - Eleanor Spence from
year 3 wrote this prayer a while ago. She
didn't have any help and I think it's lovely.

Ladies of Leesfield
The Ladies of Leesfield hold
regular monthly meetings on a Thursday evening at 7.30 in the Community Room at St Thomas' Church. These meetings always
have a topic, and there are often guest speakers. Coffee mornings at the homes of the members are also held
monthly on Saturday mornings, and during the summer months Tea and Toast are
served in St. Thomas’ Church. Occasional coach trips are arranged to places of
interest. For further details e-mail Audrey at aatkinsons@yahoo.com. Ladies of
Leesfield meetings and events are included in our Parish Calendar by clicking here
If any Ladies feel that they would like to know more about our group, please come along to a meeting and see if it would suit you. Then if you like it, you could come along permanently. We are a group of Christian Ladies who meet for companionship, friendship and hopefully - FUN.
Our programme is published in the church magazine and the topics are varied.
Although we usually start with a prayer, we are not a prayer group. We have guest speakers, quiz nights (just fun - not Mastermind), and coffee evenings. Please don’t be shy - just ask one of our ladies in church or just turn up. You will be made most welcome.
Rose Queen
Congratulations Emilia on becoming our Rose Queen for 2017. You did a great job today. Well done.
Thanks to everyone who put the time and effort into making this a special day and thanks to everyone who came along and showed support - even thought the weather wasn't the best.
Good luck for the next 12 months to Emilia and her retinue and all mums, dad's and grandparents.

Rose Queen Bethany and her retinue |
Many thanks to Rose
Queen Bethany Jones and her Retinue as they get ready to retire after a fantastic
year representing the Parish.
Rose Queen in Waiting
Emilia Grace Harris, and her Retinue, (including the behind the scenes helpers)
are busy getting ready for the Rose Queen Crowning at St Agnes’ on Saturday 20th May 2017 at
2pm.
The crowning of Rose Queen Ellie Ashton took place on in May 2015, and once again, the Sunday school children and teachers worked hard to make beautiful, eye-catching decorations for the church. Even though the weather did not crack the flags, everyone had a fantastic day and whilst it was a successful fundraising event, more importantly this longstanding tradition continues. Since then, with the support of retinue parents a number of other social and fundraising activities have taken place. The ‘At Home’ welcomed 9 other queens to the church; it was ‘eyes down for a full house’ at the family bingo night and everyone enjoyed getting dressed up and dancing at the FAB night (Fancy-dress And Boogie). There have been many smaller activities too, from table-top stalls in conjunction with St Agnes School; a used book sale from the aftermath of a bedroom clear out and Ellie’s dad Mike, continues to make marmalade using Grandad John’s secret recipe. We have also managed to secure a night in March for a dinner dance at the White Hart.
Part of the Rose
Queen’s responsibilities is to represent St Agnes and Ellie and her retinue
have visited a number of churches over the last 12 months to attend other
‘crownings’ and ‘at homes’. The Whit
Walks were somewhat damp this year, but this did not stop Ellie and her retinue
from walking the streets of Lees armed with umbrellas and boots – and dad to
assist with the ‘carrying’.
Ellie’s reign will
end on Saturday May 7th 2016, as the crowning of the new Rose Queen elect
Bethany Jones will take place and she will have the honour of representing St
Agnes for the upcoming year.
